Crafty Felt-Making Programs

are a unique and fun way for your students to learn about the magic of wool.  Renée will lead them through the process...from the shearing of the sheep to the dying of the wool.  They'll learn how the wool is cleaned and what it looks like under a microscope.  With hot water and soapy bubbles for the younger kids to barbed felting needles for the older ones, they're all sure to create something amazing to take home!

Wet-Felting (Grades k-6)

Wet Felting is a traditional way to make felt from un-spun wool.  We use locally-made organic soap, hot water and bubble wrap or nylon stockings to help make the wool take on the shape we want, and it's always a soapy fun time!

The projects are level specific and each grade will create something different.

 Needle-Felting (Grades 4-6 only)

Needle felting is a technique used by felting artists to create decorative embellishments and sculptural forms.  By placing their wool on top of a foam block and poking it with a barbed felting needle, your students will be able to create some cute fuzzy creations or pictures.  The poking tangles the wool and creates felt!

The projects are level specific and each grade will create something different.

Felted Mural Project (entire school)

Renée will work with the school to determine a theme for the mural, and will create an image from which to work with the children. She will connect with teachers and students to ensure that some preliminary learning about the mural's topic has been done to facilitate the children's creative expression.

The kids will then be led through 2 hour workshops, first creating a simple felting project to learn about the medium.  They can take this practise piece home as a reminder of their experience.  Then, they'll discuss the collaborative image planned, and what they've learned about the concept up until that point. Each classroom will be responsible for creating a certain element of the final image, which will then be created by Renée in her Studio.  It will be framed and hung in the school as a lasting memory of the experience.
