Crafty Clay Programs will introduce your students to the medium of clay and its infinite possibilities!

They'll receive two full one-hour lessons with Renée; the first being the Creative Clay Session, and the second the Glazing Session.

She brings everything she needs except for tables and water, and you'll find the process to be very organized and efficient.

During the first lesson, she'll teach your students the science of how clay works and where it comes from.  They'll learn new vocabulary such as 'kiln', 'score', 'ceramic', and 'fire'.  Form and function will be introduced, along with techniques needed to ensure positive results when making projects with clay.....such as why making solid balls of clay might explode in the kiln!

The second lesson includes an interesting description of glaze and how it's made.  The kids will get to see examples of glaze ingredients, learn how it is absorbed into their clay creations, and will understand why it becomes shiny after being fired.  They'll learn new words like 'porous', 'layer', and 'silica'.  They'll each glaze their own pottery, choosing from 10 different glazes (Renée's recipes of course!).

Each Grade Level is taught a project specific to their abilities, and unique from the other grades.  After the projects have gone through the entire process, they are returned to the classrooms all wrapped separately so that it's easy for the teachers to hand them out, and for the kids to bring them home safely.

2.  Mural Project

This fantastic collaborative project is a wonderful way to include the creativity of the entire school into one large-scale clay mural!  It will be a beautiful point of interest for visitors and students to enjoy for years to come.

Renée will work with your school to decide upon a theme for the mural (nature, for example), and then work on a plan for each classroom to create their own 'sub-themes'.  Trees, insects, or fish could all fall under the nature theme.

She'll lead the kids through the process of how to create their own tiles from scratch, and brainstorm with them about ideas and images related to the chosen theme.  The tiles will then be fired and built into big panels to install in the location of your choice within your school.
